London digital agency, Chameleon Net has completed a project that enables The Random House Group to fulfil sales of e-books from its website, www.rbooks.co.uk.

The new functionality, launched in April, has been developed by Chameleon Net and integrated into the website and ecommerce system which Chameleon Net created for the publisher in 2007.

Electronic material is stored and delivered to online buyers by Adobe's Content Server 4 software which Chameleon Net helped Random House evaluate while still in beta mode, and then subsequently integrated into the existing e-commerce technology. The application provides seamless processing of online ebook sales, also enabling user downloads and rights management, all alongside physical book purchase and fulfilment.

The software also allows Random House to offer an ebook sales and fulfilment service to other publishers and pass on significant economies of scale through its distribution arm, Random House Distribution Division (comprising The Book Service, Grantham Book Services and Transworld).

“This evolves our direct-to-consumer offering at a key point in the development of the e-book market,” says Paula Neary, Publishing Systems Director at Random House. “Following on from the creation of our e-commerce system, we want an e-book purchase from Random House to be as intuitive and easy for digital products as it is for physical books.”

Dan Martin, Marketing Director at Chameleon Net, said, “Two years on from launching the Random House consumer sales website, we are delighted to have introduced this exciting new functionality. This is an excellent example of the value we place in long-term client relationships.”
